If there’s one thing an avid traveler needs to learn, it’s how to pack like one. It's quite the underrated skill to be well-prepared and organized without over-packing and it could potentially even save you money with many airlines now charging baggage add-ons depending on the weight needed. Being able to pack efficiently is an achievement in itself; want to discover how you can make the most of your suitcase? Read on to find out the items you need to have on your packing list.
1. Packing Cubes
These handy little things are so convenient and a great way to keep your suitcase organized. They come in all different sizes and fun colours, too. You can use them to separate your tops and bottoms from socks and underwear or divide your electronics from your accessories. Different colours can also help families traveling together decipher which cubes belong to whom. Being able to stack these cubes on top of one another also makes it easy to take advantage of all the space in your suitcase while still keeping things organized.
2. Dryer Sheets
Especially great for those longer backpacking trips, dryer sheets keep your clothes (and shoes) smelling fresh until you get a chance to do laundry. Or if you’re traveling for a short business meeting, having these babies handy will help mask that ‘I-just-got-off-the-plane’ smell. They're also super versatile; wipe them over your clothes when you need to eliminate annoying static. Didn't bring a lint roller? Dryer sheets to the rescue! Don't know where that iron in the hotel room has been? Iron a dryer sheet (on low) to clean it before using it on your own clothes. The possibilities are limitless!
3. Dust Bags
A staple item to carry your shoes in to keep dust and dirt away from the other items in your luggage and can also double up as a dirty laundry bag. For those who are like me and need their straightening iron with them at all times, it's also the perfect storage bag. When they get soiled, just throw them into the wash and they’ll be ready to be reused for your next trip.
4. Water Bottle
Having a good water bottle while on the road is such a necessity. It can be used to keep your hot drinks hot, and your cold drinks nice and refreshing. Nothing beats a cold one at the top of a peak to quench your thirst after a long hike.
The beauty of traveling is precisely that; enjoying the beauty of our awesome planet. With single-use plastics, its negative impact has taken a huge toll on our environment and as a citizen of society there are so many things we can do to help (now that’s a topic on its own). Not only is traveling with a reusable water bottle great for the environment but also super convenient for you.
5. Universal Adapter
The world is indeed getting smaller but the different outlet plugs in every country is still a clear indicator that we are still a ways from getting there! This will be your savior for those multi-destination/backpacking trips or if you're going away to just one other country who's power source is different from your own. An often overlooked item but good to have for every trip!
6. Take Photos of Important Documents
In an electronic world, most bookings you make will have an online confirmation. Make sure to save these documents so they are accessible offline as well. You never know when having an electronic copy of your travel documents might come in handy. That goes for your itinerary confirmations and voucher numbers as well. Always carry a back up! Your phone is usually more easily accessible than reaching into your luggage for paperwork anyway.
7. Pen
Lastly, always keep a pen handy – I can practically guarantee you'll be faced with filling out a form of some kind when you're traveling. Whether they be declaration cards, on-arrival travel visas or other forms of immigration paperwork - you'll be glad you brought it.
Once you've got these essentials locked and loaded, the rest is just gravy on top. Happy packing!
